Summer Bootcamp FAQS
When are tryouts for the team usually held?
Tryouts for the 2024-2025 Competitive season will take place within the first 2 weeks of the start of the quarter. We will hold informational sessions for those exact dates and what you need to do to prepare!
How does one prepare for bootcamp?
You don't need to have any prior experience, we will be going through all the basics. But if you want to get a headstart, you can take a look at our tryout packet!
If we do the bootcamp, is there a better chance we get into the club?
All participants must go through the same tryout process as those who do not participate in bootcamp. That being said, it is a great way to prepare for tryouts and meet your potential future teammates!
Will you be behind if you do not attend bootcamp?
Of course not! We teach everything during Fall Quarter once you are on the team, the bootcamp is just for those who have the time during summer and want to get experience before their tryouts.
How often does Mock Trial @ UCSD meet for meetings/practices during the academic year?
Meetings will depend on your team assignment, as they will be scheduled depending on the schedules of each team member; however, one can expect to attend 2-3 practices per week.
Do you need previous Mock Trial experience or meet requirements/be in college to join?
No previous experience necessary, and no requirements to join. Anyone regardless of educational level (high school, entering college, graduate, and beyond) can join. All we require is an eagerness to learn!
Will there be any penalties for missing Summer Bootcamp meetings?
There won't be any penalties for missing meetings during the summer, however be sure to review the presentations and notes we will send out at the end of each bootcamp day to catch up for the next meeting!
How much of a commitment is Mock Trial?
Mock Trial is a large time commitment, with multiple practices a week as well as tournaments, however it is entirely manageable due to how team-orientated each practice is. We totally understand the importance of schoolwork, so how manageable MT is is based on your ability to communicate with your team/captains.
Is this Summer Bootcamp exclusively for rookies?
The program is mostly centered around the basics of Mock Trial, but could be useful as a refresher for experienced members since we will be practicing with a civil case which is what AMTA will come out with this year.
What kinds of activities will bootcamp consist of? Who will be leading the bootcamp?
Bootcamp will be led by members of Mock Trial @ UCSD. Bootcamp will include presentations on what MT is, basics of different witnesses and how to direct/cross them, attorney statements, speaker moments from real Attorneys/Judges, and a mock scrimmage!
Will previous Mock Trial experience in high school help with college level Mock Trial?
Any public speaking experience will be helpful to Mock Trial, though the specifics of college Mock Trial differ from high school Mock Trial.
Will we be learning roles or will we just practice skills?
